Earth Day isn’t just a date – it’s a reminder that caring for our planet begins in our own neighborhoods. This year, we partnered with Urban Creators at the Life Do Grow Farm – an urban farm and creative commons in North Philadelphia – to honor our planet through a powerful day of service and community connection.

Mr. George, a pillar of YouthBuild Philly’s Building Trades program for over two decades and now serving as Director, led this year’s Earth Day event. Working alongside students, staff, and the farm team, he helped organize a series of volunteer projects focused on preserving and beautifying the space in preparation for the upcoming harvest.

Students and staff from YB Philly and Urban Creators split into groups to divide and conquer the service projects. Teams were tasked with removing debris and putting down blocks for better gardening – this allows for better growth of plants throughout the garden. Some teams focused on building flower beds and garden boxes, while others brought them to life with fresh coats of paint once the construction was finished. Gardens, though human-made, play a vital role in supporting natural ecosystems. Keeping them healthy not only enhances their beauty but also helps sustain plant life and extend crop longevity.

It’s powerful to see how caring for the environment can strengthen neighborhoods and contribute to safer, more vibrant spaces. For our young people, events like this not only serve their communities but also reaffirm their commitment to service, leadership, and positive change. Their hands-on involvement reflects a deepening investment in creating a better Philadelphia, not just for themselves, but for everyone around them.

Thank you to Urban Creators for welcoming our students and giving them the opportunity to apply their YouthBuild skills in a meaningful, real-world setting. We’re proud to keep growing together and to have made this Earth Day a true day of service and impact.

Fun fact: The farm got electricity for the very first time in 2019 – thanks to solar panels installed by YouthBuild Philly students!

Thank you, YB Philly
