October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. At YouthBuild Philly, a group of students displayed excellent leadership in organizing a “Purple Thursday” to help raise awareness for such an important message – particularly for young people.  Staff and students were encouraged to wear purple, and many signed pledges to stand against domestic violence.  Funds were raised for Women Against Abuse by students in the healthcare track, and they had the opportunity to present their donation at the non-profit’s headquarters in Center City.

Ms. Doris, who contributed to the campaign, said: “Domestic violence is a public health epidemic that affects 1 in 3 women across the U.S.  This is an issue that impacts you, your classmates, your family, your neighborhood, your workplace, and your community.”  She was excited by the students’ incredible efforts and all of the important conversations concerning domestic and dating violence taking place in YouthBuild spaces.
