STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP

YouthBuild Philadelphia has a strong, supportive student culture.
When students are asked what they like most about the program, the most common answer is, "YouthBuild Philadelphia is a family."

Students have ample opportunity to get to know each other and themselves through various extracurricular leadership opportunities and social activities. YouthBuild staff assist in the implementation of numerous clubs, committees and activities based on student interest. Some examples are outlined below.

Youth Congress
Each year, ten students are elected to serve as a student governing body. Youth Congress members help lead student assemblies, talk to visitors and the press, and represent their fellow classmates at local and national events. Youth Congress also meets with the Executive Director to discuss policy issues that affect the school.

Youth Congress members are linked to a national network through YouthBuild USA, which provides numerous leadership opportunities such as the Young Leader’s Council and the National Alumni Council. Some students return as alumni to serve on the YouthBuild Philadelphia Board of Directors.

Award Ceremonies
The school honors students six times per year for a variety of achievements (grades, attendance, improvements, etc.) at school-wide award ceremonies. During the final ceremony, students also have the opportunity to recognize fellow students and staff.

Student Activities
Students can sign up for a variety of after-school activities and clubs, which are based on student interest. Clubs like performing arts, fitness, sports, chess, and fashion usually meet once a week, and are built into the YouthBuild class schedule.

Committees and Events
While some committees are year-long commitments, others are formed at various points in the year for events, etc.

Prom Committee
The Prom Committee helps to choose the theme, surveys students for ideas, implements fundraisers, and assists in setup, party favors and king and queen selection.

Yearbook Committee
Yearbook Committee participants are responsible for assiting with the creation of the annual yearbook, including design, writing and photography.

Other Activities

School Picnic
Early in the course of each year, students and their children are invited to Fairmount Park for a "getting to know you" picnic with the YouthBuild staff. Dancing, sports, lounging, and of course free food are always part of this fun event.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Staff cook a wonderful meal for students (and their children, if any). This celebration generally takes place the day before Thanksgiving.

Break Activities
Outings and activities are offered between sessions so that the senses of spirit and family remains strong among the students. Past activities include bowling and rollerskating, and attending/visiting museums, plays and historical sites.
