The National Youth Service Programme is intended to re-engage South African citizens with their country and their communities by providing meaningful training through service. The primary target groups include: unemployed and unskilled youth, rural youth, women, youth with disabilities, youth in conflict with the law, and youth accessing social grants (those that are medically fit to work) (target ages range from 18 to 35).
Sectors targeted include (emphasis on labor intensive activities): water and sanitation, health and social development, housing and community infrastructure, the environment and nature conservation, and education.
In the words of Dr. E G Pahad, Minister in the Presidency:
"South Africa NYS can and must play a crucial role in the fight against poverty and in the promotion of full citizenship and social inclusion. The NYS can and must contribute to capacity building, develop marketable skills, providing access to workplace networks, and boost confidence and self-esteem, and thereby play an important role in youths’ development and in achieving South Africa’s national development objectives."

Make A Difference Day
On the morning of October 27, 2006, YouthBuild Philadelphia celebrated national Make A Difference Day by cleaning up Nicetown Park (in partnership with Nicetown CDC), and fencing unused lots in the Allegheny West area (in partnership with Allegheny West Foundation).
For the park project, students and staff joined with volunteers from the Philadelphia Recreation Department, Nicetown CDC, and Philadelphia Green to pickup trash, reseed, repair a bricked area, rake weeds and leaves, and remove graffiti from playground equipment.
For the fence project, students and staff erected fences in front of nine unused lots in the Allegheny West area.

Rebuilding a Community - Mole Street - June 22, 2006
On June 22, 2006, YouthBuild Philadelphia and Universal Community Homes celebrated the completion of four affordable houses in South Philly. YouthBuild was contracted to rehabilitate the properties by Universal, a community development corporation serving the South Central Philadelphia area.
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony marked a year of hard work and learning by YouthBuild students, who rehabilitated houses and stabilized lots in the neighborhood as part of YouthBuild's extensive hands-on training and community service curriculum. The school took the houses through every phase of reconstruction including demolition, foundation, framing, drywall, painting and finishing work.
Speakers and Ribbon Cutters for the day included State Representative Harold James, 4th District Councilman Michael Nutter, Universal CFO Shahied Dawan, Universal COO Victoria Wilson, YouthBuild Executive Director Simran Sidhu, YouthBuild Construction and Business Development Director Don Pinkney, YouthBuild students Craig Green and Izaiah Daniels, and 58-year Mole Street resident Rita Butler.

Celebrating National Youth Service Day
More than 200 YouthBuild Philadelphia students (160+), staff (40+) and community members converged to clean and stabilize abandoned lots on South Mole Street in Philadelphia on Friday, April 21 in celebration of National Youth Service Day. YouthBuild chose the Mole Street location (between Ellsworth and Federal Streets) because the school is currently in the last stage of rehabilitating four houses on the block for low-income families. The completed houses will be dedicated to the community in a special ceremony in June.
The group engaged in trash pickup, weeding and general beautification for seven lots, generating hundreds of bags of debris and garbage and several large piles of bricks and rusted objects. Some of the lots were cleared of excess growth and weeds to look more attractive, long-term.
Due to the progress that was made on National Youth Service Day, the students can continue further stabilization on the lots during class service trips for the rest of the school year. A development corporation will eventually designate some of the lots as future housing sites.
The students’ efforts to help rehabilitate a community were reported on FOX 29, ABC 6 and KYW Radio. Their efforts also inspired community members to come out and inquire about how they could continue the progress being made in the neighborhood. Project organizer Katie Siegmund said that the day was a success because it, "inspired community members into action."

Martin Luther King Day of Service
On January 16, 2006, YouthBuild Philadelphia joined a group of 2,500 students, citizens and community and political leaders at Martin Luther King High School in North Philadelphia to celebrate the 11th Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. YouthBuild Philadelphia helped organize this wonderful day with the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service Organization and Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia. Sponsors included Prudential Fox & Roach, Realtors and Citizens Bank.
The day was truly a "day on" for YouthBuild. Our students contributed creative and technical energies to the following projects:
“Home in a Box” – Partnership with Habitat for Humanity
YBPCS organized and took part in efforts to frame a single-family house, which was boxed and shipped to Lafayette, Louisiana to help a single family displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Prior to MLK Day, YouthBuild students and staff spent several months prepping the frames for the big day!
Playhouse - Stenton Family Manor
YouthBuild constructed a two-story playground playhouse, which was sent to Stenton Family Manor for use by children living at the facility. Stenton Family Manor offers institutional housing to the homeless and families who are actively seeking employment.
Community Center Rehabilitation - CSEEP Job Training
YouthBuild students and staff rehabilitate two classrooms and another unused space at Annunciation BVM School to create rooms for a CSEEP (Community Self Empowerment and Employment Program) job-training program.
YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School
Students and staff showed unity and pride by beautifying the school.
The day was a great success, and the excitement and energy endured well until the last nail was hammered. The event drew major media attention, and our students were featured in newspapers, TV reports, and radio broadcasts around the city! Click here to access some online articles about the event.
Many notables participated in the day's activities, trading in their briefcases and ties for hard hats and hammers. Special guests included Mayor John F. Street, Representative Dwight Evans, First Lady Marjorie Rendell, Congressman Chaka Fattah, School Reform Commission Chair James Nevels, Southeaster PA United Way President & CEO Alba Martinez, PennSERVE Executive Director Karen Kaskey, Southeastern PA Red Cross CEO Tom Foley, Philadelphia Councilman Michael Nutter, State Senator LeAnna Washington, School District CEO Paul Vallas, Former U.S. Senator Harris Wofford, Prudential Principal Gerry Griesser and Citizens Bank Chairman & CEO Stephen Steinour.
